Republic Day of the Maldives

Republic Day is celebrated most majestically in the capital on 11th November.

Initially, republic was formed in the year 1953, but it did not last for a long time and monarchy was restored in the same year. Later, in the year 1968 on November 11th Maldives finally became a republic.The monarchy ruling over the islands was abolished and replaced by a republic, and the name of the country changed from Maldives Islands to Republic of Maldives.

To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade and other special events are held on the streets of the capital Male'. The parades, marches,  folk dances, traditional songs and the ensuing events are telecasted by the National Television and is watched by thousands of Maldivians in every corner of the country. The parade also includes many traditional dance troupes, to symbolize the cultural heritage.

The school children spend many days preparing for the event, every detail is taken care of, from their practice for the drills, the essential props and their uniforms and the smartly dressed children parade the streets while spectators watch on from the streets.

This national holiday invokes a real sense of family and togetherness and brings the whole country together as women, men and children all come together sharing the deeper feelings of patriotism.

Republic Day is celebrated with much zeal and pride all across the country.
