Maldives joins celebrations to mark 60 th anniversary of declaration of human rights

The Maldives on Friday joined other members of the United Nations members in Geneva to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, according to Foreign Ministry.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, making it one of the main pillars of the UN. High-level delegates from around the world gathered to celebrate the event at the historic Palais des Nations. Foreign Ministry informed that the Maldives delegation was led by Ahmed Saleem, President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva.

The event began with the recital of key Articles from the Universal Declaration by children representing the different countries, regions, faiths, languages and cultures of the United Nations. The event also featured speeches by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay; and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela.

Speaking at the general segment of the Session, Ambassador Ghafoor informed delegates about the important strides taken by the Maldives to better promote and protect the rights and freedoms contained in the Declaration Foreign ministry revealed.

“It is my singular honor to inform this assembly that the vision laid down 60 years ago by the drafters of the Declaration, has found practical reality today in the new democratic Maldives. In today’s Maldives, the ideals and principles contained in the Universal Declaration have found real-world form in our proud new Constitution; in our vibrant free media; in our active civil society; in our independent judiciary; in our assertive national Human Rights Commission; in the free, fair and calm presidential elections; and in the smooth transfer of power from the old to the new Governments” Ambassador Gafoor said.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights has given rise to a significant international human rights system including, inter alia, the recently-established UN Human Rights Council, nine core international human rights instruments (Covenants and Conventions) and related Treaty Bodies, a powerful network of UN human rights Special Rapporteurs and a powerful human rights Secretariat, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which has offices in all regions of the world.

For its part, the Maldives is an active and vocal participant at the Human Rights Council; has signed and/or ratified eight of the nine core human rights instruments; has extended a Standing Invitation to all UN Special Rapporteurs; and works closely with the OHCHR on national and regional human rights issues said the foreign ministry.
